I noticed that my computer seemed to be a bit slow starting up recently, and used Spybot to have a look at what runs at startup.  there were 3 or 4 entries fro ctfmon, and the description indicated that it wasb't a particularly good thing to run (it said not to confuse it with the genuine file used by Office XP.  Now I don't have Office XP installed, deleted these entries.
Today Defender popped up a message saying a change had been made and that this file had been added to startup (I can't remember the exact words)
I look again and there it was.
What is it? do I need it? and if not, how do i get rid of it?

Thanks Pierre, what I don't understand is that it's apparently something to do with Office XP.  I don't have Office XP.  ANyway, I've followed the instruction for disabling it (via languages in the Control Panel) and will see if it comes back.

One of its uses is for wireless keyboards and mice if you have one of these that needs it then it may stop working in office. Its easy enough to turn back on if there is a problem
