Re: constant change of local IP.. stop!?

I have to do a similar thing with my network colour laser printer. If its internal IP changes I have to mess around re-installing drivers and messing around with the printer settings.

Assign it a static IP outside of the DHCP range of the router, I think I set my DHCP range from 192.168.0.20, to 192.168.0.255. So I have my printer set to 192.168.0.3.

EDIT: Corrected range.

Re: constant change of local IP.. stop!?

I don't remember the full details of what I did on the router, but I had to set up port forwarding for access to an OpenVPN server.

1) give the PC a static IP (this is set on the PC itself, in the Network Interface properties). Make sure the IP is NOT in the DHCP range

2) set up the port forwarding of the router to point the relevant port to that IP address.

If you are still having issues, then say so, and I'll remote in and look at the router config.

Re: constant change of local IP.. stop!?

Did you check that the IP had actually changed? Maybe there is another problem occurring.
That's RPM to you!!

See post 7 @7up the "technicolor 582" and as you may know port forwarding only works with DHCP client on auto not a static device set IP address with this router.

I've got the 582 and can confirm that its port forwarding will work with manual statically-addressed devices.

Re: constant change of local IP.. stop!?

Do you have a hosts file?

It allows you to associate a particular machine name with a chosen ip address.
You would have to set all machines on your LAN to have the same setting.

I believe even Windows 7 provided this facility - although the implementation was a bit mad in that it had multiple hosts files. Cheesy

Re: constant change of local IP.. stop!?

My understanding of the OPs requirement is that they wish for their Plex server to be accessible to devices outside his LAN (hence the static address from Plusnet) and so a hosts file on those devices isn't going to solve his issue.

I am intrigued by your comment about Windows 7 having multiple hosts files? There should only ever be one.

Re: constant change of local IP.. stop!?

I know - its just that I seem to remember having to change several of them.

I'm guessing that admin plus each user might have had their own hosts file?

Re: constant change of local IP.. stop!?

I thought you might have something there but having checked its location (%systemroot%\System32\Drivers\etc\hosts) it applies for all users.

Might you have been thinking of the LMHOSTS file? That is similar in function to HOSTS but is for NetBIOS names instead (i.e. more of a Windows-centric name resolution method).

Re: constant change of local IP.. stop!?

So both the LAN address and the WAN address keeps changing?

Re: constant change of local IP.. stop!?

Their WAN address is remaining static, but the LAN address of the Plex server keeps changing and in doing so breaks the port forwarding configuration on the router.

Re: constant change of local IP.. stop!?

You may be right - I would probably have changed all of them, just to be sure.

Re: constant change of local IP.. stop!?

so did anyone have a solution?

local ip has changed again, i can still see externally but it is limited and then uses plex servers to transcode etc

last time i set a local ip it broke my connection.  do i need a different range/ip etc?  then set plex in router to use it etc

will this affect anything else?

Re: constant change of local IP.. stop!?

Have you taken the device off of DHCP?

Set up a static local IP outside of the DHCP range. Then it won't change.

You will need to put the DNS servers in I think too.

Sounds like you've tried it, when you say "last time I set a local Ip it broke my connection" and reverted back. I am just assuming this by the way I'm not saying you have.

Re: constant change of local IP.. stop!?

i just did the old fashioned way set local static but didnt add anything else

so maybe try another address and whatever the dns servers are
