hi, got an old pc running ubuntu 10.10. got a wifi lan card I put in it, hoping to connect to my, thomson wireless router in another room , have tried configuring the wifi card as ad hoc but no idea what the other entries need are. perhaps someone has advice to help me connectup please? I knoe i could run a long cable between them, but would trip up and break my neck, so any help gratefully received

You need the Client set up to connect as an "Infrastructure" client .... not Ad Hoc.
The standard UBUNTU wireless utility will find the available wireless SSIDs and allow you to select yours. Then, all you need to enter is the WPA Passphrase.

The old PC may have a wireless card which only supports WEP which will mean reconfiguring the router security - not a good idea

If you click on the wifi icon (next to the speaker volume icon)
You should see something like the attachment...
Select the obvious entry (the Thompson Fxxxxx) and enter the password when requested to.
If you don't see all this, you can check that the PC sees the hardware by entering into
Applications -> Accessories -> Terminal the command
You should see something like
