XP Updates

Recently fitted a new hard drive to my PC. Reinstalled windows and downloaded all the updates and installed.
Then encountered a problem a few days later and had to reinstall windows again (Repair install). No problem. When I go to updates or get the update messages, download of the updates is confirmed but the updates (all 81 of them) will not install. Get a message download size 0KB (Files already on hard drive?). Run install and after a couple of minutes get a message Some (All) the updates were not installed.
Any ideas?

Re: XP Updates

There is a known problem with updates after a repair.
Go to http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=943144 and see if that helps at all.  There was an update to Windows update that caused it.
Also, there was a thread on this site at the time http://community.plus.net/forum/index.php/topic,1508.0.html

Re: XP Updates

I always prefer a clean re-install.
It takes longer but I feel more confident in the outcome.
I also patch from a box running WSUS so the inevitable huge downloads are much quicker.

Re: XP Updates

I experienced exactly the same problem  and as indicated in the other threads the fix is straight forward. All you need to do is copy the following text into Notepad and then save it as .bat rather than .txt. The once you run the bat file XP should update correctly.

regsvr32 wuapi.dll
regsvr32 wuaueng.dll
regsvr32 wuaueng1.dll
regsvr32 wucltui.dll
regsvr32 wups.dll
regsvr32 wups2.dll
regsvr32 wuweb.dll

It should run if you double click it.

Wiping the drive is the objective....to clean all rubbish and replace it with a fresh copy of your O/S.
You do, of course back up all required documents, pictures, music etc.

Re: XP Updates

I alway do a clean install and use disc imaging software at points along the way such as
Raw installation with motherboard drivers and AV
Then after SP2
Then after all Windoze major update (all 84 at last count)
Defrag the disc with Disc keeper and do another.
Install a second disc to image to and then copy off to a DVD to save space.
This process ensures that if iot hiccups along the way, you can always go back one step.

Re: XP Updates

Help please re Spider's solution to installing the updates after a re-install of XP.........
I took the advice and it worked while I was still on the PC
But when I came to boot up again later...problem!!!
The boot up goes as far as the Blue screen wallpaper but then comes a box asking for username and password....but I did not give it a password when I re-installed the XP...therefore I cannot get in to the startup screen!!
Has anybody had a similar experience and if so knows a solution????Huh
