XP SP3

If you reinstall windows using a very old original XP installation disk can you then go on to the microsoft website and download SP3 only. ?
What I am really getting at is SP3 a replacement for SP1 & SP2  or do they all need to be downloaded. The other thing I wish to know is, following a fresh installation of windows XP if I then just clicked on update windows I assume everything would be automatically uploaded but what size of file are we talking about. ?
My current windows set up is up to date but I guess there is no way of saving these settings if I wish to do a fresh installation (due to the clutter on my computer and the increasing slow speed)

Re: XP SP3

The best way is to slipstream SP3 onto your windows disk (also SP2 first if the windows disk doesn't include it - there is some debate about this but it is safer)
If you need advice on slipstreaming shout up.
I use nLite http://www.nliteos.com/index.html
A word of warning - if you have an OEM disk the key may not be accepted when you try to install from a slipstreamed disk and under those circumstances you will need to install as SP2 then apply the SP3 patch (I think that this only applies to the first series of OEM keys)

Re: XP SP3

I do not have much knowledge about computers so am a bit worried about slipstreaming SP3 on to my windows disk. If I attempt this and bodge it up could I end up with a non functioning windows disk ? As you know there is no way to copy an original windows disk so it is not something I can experiment on.

Re: XP SP3

About a billion pirates have copied the original windows disk. Slipstreaming doesnt touch the disk you copy everything to your hard drive add sp3 and burn a new disk
see http://www.howtohaven.com/system/slipstream-xp-service-pack-3.shtml  or http://lifehacker.com/386526/slipstream-service-pack-3-into-your-windows-xp-installation-cd
If you get nlite you can customize the disk as well;
