XP IP address Query

Hi,50% of the time when I switch my computer on it does not connect. The problem seems to be the IP address.Using repair sometimes solves this.If not switching the router off and on again tends to work.I have noticed my IP address is 192.168.1.xxx.Looking on the microsoft site the IP address should be 192.168.0.xxx.Is this the problem ?.A second computer works fine and changing the wireless channel makes no difference.

Re: XP IP address Query

Ignore Microsoft, your router rules.
What make/model is it?

Re: XP IP address Query

By default I think Thomson's work in the 192.168.1.xxx range.
(Netgears are usually 192.168.0.xxx)

Re: XP IP address Query

It's probably your wireless adaptor on the errant computer becoming a little erratic.

Re: XP IP address Query

Do you turn your router off? If so, making sure the router has fully started before turning on the PC might help.

Re: XP IP address Query

Thanks for the replies.I do turn the router off somtimes and switch both the computer and router on within a few seconds of each other.I will leave it switched on in future, hopefully this will solve the problem.
I am using a wireless usb adaptor (dongle?).The signal is excellent.Would their be any benefit to using a pci card wireless adaptor

Re: XP IP address Query

Still having the same problem. Now 70% of the time when I switch on I have to renew the IP address using the repair function. This normally works first time but sometimes fails and I have to restart computer.Router is left on 24/7.BT wireless dongle.Windows XP pro,sp3.Excellent signal.Another computer using Win 7 connects without a problem. Its a pain. What can I do.

Re: XP IP address Query

On the Windows start menu, select run, type "cmd" (no quotes!) and press enter.
In the window that appears type two commands - no quotes...
"cd Desktop"
"ipconfig /all > output.txt"

Send the contents of output.txt to this forum.
Finally type exit to leave the command window

Re: XP IP address Query

OK, from the Windows XP desktop -
Select the green "start" button.
Double click "Control Panel"
Double click "Network Connections"
From the list of network connections, use the RIGHT HAND mouse button to single click the name of the network connection.
This will bring up a list from which you want to LEFT HAND mouse button click on "Properties".
This will open a new window relating to the chosen network connection.
In the middle of this new window there is a box with a list of "The connection uses the following items:"
Scroll to the bottom of this list to highlight the line that says "Internet Protocol (TCP/IP).
Single LEFT HAND mouse click the "Properties" button.
Another new window should open, with a "General" tab at the top.
Select "Use the following DNS server addresses:"
Then fill in the boxes as follows -
"Preferred DNS server:" = "208.67.220.220"
"Alternate DNS server:" = "8.8.4.4"
Press the "OK" button, and the window will close.
Press "Close" on the previous opened window, which will close.
Then close down the "Network Connections" window.
Select the green "Start" button from the desktop
Select "Turn Off Computer"
Select "Restart"
Wait for the PC to start and hopefully it will miraculously be working !

Re: XP IP address Query

I don't understand, what do you mean by -
[quote=bumbershoot]apparently I cannot send it as it is the wrong type of file!!!
Do you have a file named "output.txt" on your desktop ?
What is it that can't send the file ?
If the file "output.txt" does exist, if you double click on it to open the file in Windows Notepad,  then <ctrl+A> to select all text, then <ctrl+C> to copy to clipboard, then paste this text into your web browser when replying to this forum (which in Firefox is <ctrl+V> OR <shift+Insert>).
Hope this helps  Cool

Re: XP IP address Query

Sorry,I tried to send it and it was rejected as it was the wrong type of file.I have no idea why.I have saved it as a file though.I have just worked through your post to the point where i change settings. It is currently set to automatically asign a server. If i change it,as advised and it does not work. Can I reset it back to as it is now while offline.
