It looks as though a number of Macnook Pro owners have done just that and are not entirely happy when they slot a SSD drive in to find the data rate is severely limited

It's not a SATA1 infterface, just limited to 1.5Gbps throughput - probably for power saving reasons - I believe
Levono did the same with their thinkpads.
