Getting this message (W7) when shutting down. The computer just says 'The instructions at 0x00727000 ref memory at 0x00000001.
The memory could not be written.'
Can't switch off so could someone please advise?
Tried system restore but to my horror it's not switched on by default.
Can't go into safe mode 'cos it won't shut down.

Try holding the power button down for about 7 secs. That should force a shutdown, Then try safe mode: i've not seen the error though so can't help there much I'm afraid.
edit - just found this: http://social.answers.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/w7performance/thread/9e084fb7-7077-4a35-9ae5-f61dcc...; don't know if that would help you

I tried that but it didn't work. Now I have sorted it - I clicked on the red button in the bottom right hand corner to shut it down and it has been OK since.
Thank you for your help.

System restore is off by default? It should be on by default (it is on mine at least, clean install) I think you broke Windows with a Linux brick

No, didn't break it - this is a clean install and after this 'blip' is OK.
I have just checked and it is now up and running!

I think you should consider breaking Windows with a Linux brick.
Although it seems to be doing the job without help.
