Re: Wine Again

Are you sure your wine is 1.4, I'm using Linux Mint 15 Cinnamon myself and through normal updates I'm on wine 1.6. Try this command in a terminal :
wine --version

Re: Wine Again

Maybe it was a pm then?
A quick google using only "wine ppa" gives
ppa:ubuntu-wine/ppa
Open software sources or Synaptic
Choose add additional source
paste the above in
reload and wine should be 1.6

Re: Wine Again

or the way I would do it:-
Open a Terminal
sudo apt-add-ppa ppa:ubuntu-wine/ppa
apt update
apt upgrade
(or apt install wine if it wasn't installed)
This I find easier than messing about with the GUI's but that's just me  Grin

Re: Wine Again

well it seems to have all gone wrong again........ been waiting for a process to end for over 30 minutes now.... if I try to close the window... I get the message... process is still running if you close this window it will kill it..... I did that before... ( messing up comment above)... and when I closed it, I had to re-install Mint AGAIN... to remove all the crud caused by this page "hanging"... because I could not get wine 1.4.1 installed because of some broken parts of the packages involved... now on my 3rd re-install and getting the same thing again....
I need to get a later version of wine, because 1.4.1 does not work properly with my cwcom prog, which I am AGAIN trying to get working...
well, it does work... it connects to the internet, but not by the comport... which is what I really really want to do... despite trying to follow the COMPORT thread previously, when I did manage to get it to connect with the ComPort. !..
so now I am going to KILL that window.... and do another re-install... if you are interested in the Terminal readout... see my blogsite  http://nemosphotography.blogspot.co.uk/ ; I will leave it there for the rest of the evening, and then take it down....

Re: Wine Again

You don't need to re-install Mint just because a wine program isn't working.
Remove the ~/.wine folder (In the file manager press Ctrl+H to show hidden files) then remove the .wine folder - everything now gone.
OR
Open a terminal
killall wine
rm -rf ~/.wine
apt remove --purge wine
then the rest of what I put in above with the apt install wine at the end.

Re: Wine Again

well I killed the window... and restarted... then opened the synaptic package manager ... put wine in the search box.... then apply, and it has now installed wine 1.4.1
not sure how I managed that.. but......
(didn`t re-install because wine wasn`t working...but because the process started in Terminal... had stopped, and nothing was progressing. which caused corruption on the packages... re-install was the only way I could see to "stop/kill" the process, and start afresh..)
so now,... if I do the top three lines of your previous post, then....... I should end up with wine 1.6 ? ? ? ?
how long do you estimate that will take ?

Re: Wine Again

My typo
use "apt-add-repository" rather than ppa.
I am so used to using tab to complete the command I forget the correct one,

Re: Wine Again

OK... while you were away  Roll_eyes  I found this page....
http://www.tecmint.com/install-wine-on-ubuntu-and-linux-mint/
so I followed the terminal instructions in the black box... and ... YAY!.. now got wine 1.6 installed....
now to go away and play ( hopefully  Huh ) with CWCOM... and see if I can get the comport working ! ! ! ...
Thanks for your help again. HB...  Wink
