Windows XP Service Pack 3

Can someone please tell me if it is safe to download and install Service Pack 3 for windows XP.
I have heard differing views and after the SP2 debacle I don't want to cause more problems.
Thanks

Re: Windows XP Service Pack 3

XP SP3 isn't anything like as major an upgrade as SP2 was --  most of it is a roll up of the microsoft XP update patches since the previous service pack -- with a  few security features back ported from vista -- should make the computer run a bit smoother having all the updates installed together

Re: Windows XP Service Pack 3

I've probably seen 40 to 50 systems upgraded to SP3 recently.
I've had to roll back and reinstall SP3 on one of them, but that was probably due to corruption from another source...

Had big problems with the Zonealarm conflict, myself. Spent 3 hours on the phone to MS and MAAF sorting it out.

Re: Windows XP Service Pack 3

There was a specific problem with ZoneAlarm, but ZA fixed it within a day or so - you had to make sure you'd updated ZA before putting on the service pack I think (it was some time ago).

Re: Windows XP Service Pack 3

I've had a couple of niggles; SP3 re-installed Windows Messenger which I'd previously disabled, but the most annoying was that my dial-in dialog started popping up even though the broadband connection was functioning. I've had to delete the dial-in connection from Network connections.
I like to keep a dial-in connection as a backup in case the broadband goes down (I have had wireless modem failures twice over the last 3 years).

Re: Windows XP Service Pack 3

The dial-up dialog could be WGA (Windows Genuine Advantage) tool playing silly beggars. If I remember rightly, almost everyone was getting it after doing an update some time ago.

Re: Windows XP Service Pack 3

That sounds fairly typical of Microsoft. Has anyone found out how to fix the problem?

Re: Windows XP Service Pack 3

One thing you could try. Go to: Control Panel -> Internet Properties -> Connections tab, and make sure that "Never dial a connection" is selected, and see if that solves the problem.
