Digsby ftw - or Pidgin, if you prefer that. Both are preferable to MSN in my opinion.

I think mine (on Windows 7) has been nagging me about 2 weeks.  No problems logging in yet.

Avoid it as long as you can.
It has built in ad keyword highlighting, every time you post a link to a picture or a youtube/bing video it embeds it next to the conversation.
I'll be looking at Digsby as I'm not a fan of Pidgin, it seems too unfinished.

Re: Windows Messenger - do I really have to update it

I've been nagged by msn for weeks too but still not updated and I can also still login. It won't be long now though until MS his the "Force update" button and block all our old clients.
Anyone else been having trouble with URLs not being hyperllinked in their chats lately?

I upgraded it, despite the fact that I use Digsby as my IM client anyway. The new version seems to have gone all 'social network', with tighter integration with things like Facebook etc.

That problem magically fixes itself when you upgrade.
