Windows IE8 Startup problems

I keep getting an annoying BLUE TOP message that appears every time I click on IE8.
I’ve now typed out the message below.  Any ideas how to stop these messages appearing?

“A programme on your computer has corrupted your default search provider setting for Internet Explorer.
Internet Explorer has reset the setting to your original search provider, Bing (www.bing.com).
Internet Explorer will now open Search Settings, where you can change the setting or install more search providers.”
I find this so annoying, having to delete this and the next ‘Search Settings’ box that follows every time I load IE8.
I tried deleting IE8 programme and returned to IE7, but then someone on a Techie site suggested that I download it again as it was supposed to be faster than IE7. When I did this the above problem was back.(I’m using Windows XP Home Edition.)

Re: Windows IE8 Startup problems

You need to find out what is doing it assuming it isn't a false report
Have you installed any toolbars by accident (Java update is one culprit)
I suggest running a full scan with Malwarebytes and see if it sees anything http://www.malwarebytes.org/products/malwarebytes_free
If nothing shows up try the solutions under Problem 5 here http://foundsolutionz.blogspot.co.uk/index.html
This also covers it http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2171141

Thanks for your reply Oldjim.
I've already tried this and other virus checks, but to no avail.

Do you want bing as the default search or something else?

Giving this a try . Although this site is a bit techy, I hope I can interpret it correctly. Thanks.
Just received an E'Mail from Microsoft. They suggest waiting for the latest Service Pack before trying this Hotfix as its not yet been fully tested.
Guess I will just have to wait!!!

Re: Windows IE8 Startup problems

What level of Windows XP are you running?
The Hotfix requires Service Pack 3 (released 2008), make sure you are up to date with Windows Update before you try.

Don't confuse the search you do from the home page with the search from the toolbar! They are two different things.
