[Windows] - Free Security Software

Hi All
If you are reading this you are on the Internet, and as such you need Security Software for your computer, the Security Software you should have on your computer is: Firewall plus Anti-Virus at least on your computer.
Be careful of what you're downloading from the Internet.  Many sites contain viruses or hostile Java/ActiveX objects that may severely damage your system.
Warning uninstall your old Anti-Virus version first!

Do Not Run 2 Anti-Virus Programs At The Same Time

Re: Free Security Software

Regcure may be free to download and use to scan your Registry, but I believe, you must purchase a licence to use it to clean your system.

Re: Free Security Software

Thanks Oldjim I have added them to the list.
@Borty46 I will have a good look at that list.
Not applicable

Re: Free Security Software

AShampoo firewall - very easy to use but there is an activation email with a number in it and this is followed up by further (frequent) sales messages from the company.
If you don't like this, use an alias or disposable email address.
Spyware - Windows Defender and Spywareblaster.
Would mention that these two are the only (free) ones that provide real time scanning (AFAIK) and that the others are scanning only.

Re: Free Security Software

I would say the most important security "software" is the grey wetware between ones ears.
The licence is free, but updates must be applied continually.

Re: Free Security Software

Thanks for a great list
Much of it I have or know about but one question comes to mind
Windows has its own built in firewall and most routers have a firewall as well
What use would any of the firewalls have above what I have already
I had zone alarm once but got tired of the never ending popups asking me if this or that prograM WAS OK
often I hadn't a clue what the file or program was associated to which left me in a dilemma as to wether or not to accept it

Re: Free Security Software

Heres a another to add:
Free Windows Registry Repair
http://www.regsofts.com/free_registry_repair/registry_repair.htm
More thorough than ccleaner for reg cleanup

Unlike Windows firewall zone alarm for example lets you know who is trying to dile home.

The popups are letting you know that a program is attempting to dile home for example.

asking me if this or that prograM WAS OK
That is the point of zone alarm.

If not sure look it up, don't just say yes.
Thank you for the link, it has been added to the list.

Would that it did!!!  It lets you know the name of the file but then you have to do the legwork identifying whether this is a legitimate process or not.

The pop-ups seem to be there mostly to impress.  I'm not impressed, just distracted.

But how the heck are you supposed to know???  You either waste a ton of time trying to find out or you guess.  It's not beyond a firewall to identify legitimate processes and not bother you about them.  The better paid-for firewalls do this.

Sure, if you haven't got anything better to do, like getting on with using the computer.

Re: [Windows] - Free Security Software

A little knowledge can be dangerous.
An uneducated person with ZA installed could easily be fooled into thinking they were protected - even if they simply accepted every request that appeared.
There often seems to be a correlation between number of 'security' programs installed and the number of issues people have.
