Windows 7 very slow

Hi all. I am running a Laptop with a Pentium (R) Dual CPU T2330 1.6Ghz with 2GB memory installed. System is Windows 7.
Problem I am having is that Windows 7 is running very slowly. Generally about 5 minutes to start up and shut down. Generally about 30 seconds to react to any mouse click.
I ran a defrag last week which took five days to complete. Also ran a disk check on last start up.
I have run Hijack this and will post the report next. Not all areas were accessable as I don't seem to have admin rights.
I would do a fresh install but sadly don't have a disc.
Any ideas would be very welcomed.

Re: Windows 7 very slow

You need to get rid of bProtector (see http://secure-computer-solutions.com/blog/2012/07/bprotector_for_windows_should.html) and IBUpdaterService
2gig of ram could do with been increased to 4gig, that would give a better performance.

Re: Windows 7 very slow

Download Malwarebytes free http://www.malwarebytes.org/ and decline the offer of a free trail of the pro version during installation.
Before you run it, uninstall AVG and restart the computer.
Update Malwarebytes and run a quick scan.  It should find and offer to remove bprotector, price gong and other undesirables you have picked up.
Restart the computer.  If your start-up time has improved your problem was probably AVG malfunctioning.  Re-install the security software of your choice; my favourite is Microsoft Security Essentials http://windows.microsoft.com/en-GB/windows/products/security-essentials
If things are still bad you should back-up your files and restore your computer to its factory state.  All modern laptops have a recovery partition on the hard drive; you don't need a disc.

Go into Safe Mode with networking to do that.  Wink

Re: Windows 7 very slow

From your description of the problem, mauy I suggest you download and install the following 2 free programs both from the IOBIT company
1 Advanced system Care - this searches for many problem areas on your PC /Laptop and fixes them all at no cost.
2 Smart Defrag - this removes the need to do regular defrags as it sits in the background and defrags when the PC is idle. You just install and run the defrag once then you can forget about doing it again. I have this installed on all our PCs both at my home and the Internet cafe which we run. Note the defrag will not run on a Laptop unless its connected to the mains power as it would be a disaster if the battery ran out during a defrag.
Advanced System Care has a toolbox function which enables you to look at the startup list and disable any function or software which you don't need to start at bootup time.
I am chairman of a large computer club and all our members use both of the above programs, and we have never had a complaint about them failing
As you run AVG it may be that its slow to bootup due to AVG doing a boot time scan. This can be disabled in the program.

... so I'm surprised you don't know that Windows 7 performs defrags on a schedule by default.  Or perhaps your recommendation of Smart Defrag was more by way of general advice and not specifically directed to Rourkefamily?

Re: Windows 7 very slow

Thanks everyone for the replies. Sorry for not coming back sooner.
I have spent two days trying to remove AVG from the computer. Uninstall Programs does not work. Uninstall has worked for other programs. Tried to delete from the C Drive but of course it says it is in use. Interesting also, AVG is currently off. When you attempt to turn on, you can't!
Just backing up and then will try someof the tools I have been advised about.

Re: Windows 7 very slow

Have you cleaned out your temp files and prefetch, this normally adds a bit of speed.

This one was a challenge! Got there in the end.
Also done the temp files.
With AVG and bProtector gone, windows seems to be starting and shutting down a lot quicker.

Re: Windows 7 very slow

It's quite unlikely that bProtector was adversely affecting your start speed but AVG malfunctioning could easily have done that.  And all the indications are that is what was happening.
