Windows 7 'security' patch knocks out PCs, knackers antivirus tools

FYI...
[quote=http://www.theregister.co.uk/2013/04/12/ms_buggy_fix_roll_back/]Windows 7 users should uninstall a security patch Microsoft issued on Tuesday because some PCs failed to restart after applying the update.
The software giant advised users of Win 7 and Windows Server 2008 (both OSes are closely related, code-wise) to roll-back a patch within the MS13-036, a security update that closed two vulnerabilities in the Windows file system kernel-mode driver.
Edit:  for those that don't want to follow the above link... Wink
The dodgy fix is numbered 2823324, and exactly how one nukes it is explained here.

Strange, the MS web site says it's been removed, but my PC says it wants to install it, even AFTER I run a check for updates.  Huh

Despite that I have had no problems with Win 7 64 bit and Kaspersky mind you I haven't rebooted since the reboot after the patch

It's been installed on both my machines (W7 Pro and W7 Home) without issue and both have been rebooted several times since.

Does this security patch have an ID? or do we just make a guess at which one to remove?

Having read all the above I've decided to uninstall on both machinates as a precaution although, as yet, neither have suffered an ill effects.

I've just updated everything (in stages), even gone to IE10. No problems.  Cool

Re: Windows 7 'security' patch knocks out PCs, knackers antivirus tools

I had just loaded Windows 7 on a new machine and installed the hundred plus updates since Service Pack 1 was issued.  Thereafter it crashed on restart although I have no certain knowledge that this update was responsible.
Edit:  Looks to have been an unintended change to BIOS settings, so the Windows update was a red herring.

Although I'd had no problem since the install, I decided to uninstall it just in case.

No problems here either, and have rebooted several times, but am using Avast, so don't know if that's anything to do with it.

As an added precaution, Microsoft has removed the download links to the 2823324 update while we investigate.
