Windows 7 question

I'm thinking of buying a new laptop, been looking and asking questions in PC World, mostly come pre-installed with windows 7
Sales guy recons Office 2003 will not install (is not compatable) on WIndows 7...... DAK why.
(One of my GIS packages will not (yet) function under Office 2010, so would prefer to remain with Office 2003)

Re: Windows 7 question

I've had office 2003 on my win 7 x64 box at home for ages now. It works fine. Not sure what the guy at the shop is on about.

Re: Windows 7 question

Thanks adiewoo
Was using PC world to have a "touch and feel" when this obnoxious sales guy reconed I needed Office 2010 as Win 7 and Office 2003 are not compatable.
I mentioned that I was under the impression Win 7 ran with everything, that it was a really good stable OS, but he knew differently

None whatsoever - CD in, and off we go Smiley Didn't even need to set compatibility mode. I smell a sales pitch. Yay FUD!

Re: Windows 7 question

You should be aware that there are things that are not compatable ,in my case it was the scanner, the manufacturers have not supplied a driver,so make sure any hardware is compatable or be prepared to buy new.

Re: Windows 7 question

Here's another Office 2003/Windows 7 user.  Mine is the version with Publisher and all works well. Mind you, Open Office is free and is an excellent alternative if you fancy a change.
With regards to printer/scanner, enough time has elapsed  for manufacturers to get the drivers up to date so just go to their website and check.  Windows 7 is very good at plug and  play i.e. it finds the drivers itself.  My Epson all-in-one (several years old) worked straight away at the printer end but I put in its own drivers as IIRC it did not display the status monitor.
Don't forget that you will need to download an email client unless you are a webmail user as W7 doesn't have one integral to it.  Most folk use Windows Live Mail or Thunderbird.

Re: Windows 7 question

You're welcome.  Most people don't know about the email thing (not sure that I did either).  Anyway, just had a thought - as you have the 2003 Office suite I am wondering if it has Outlook, in which case you can install that.  Personally, I'm not enamoured of it as it is too business-like for my simple needs but it's something to think about.
Hope that you enjoy your laptop - there's nothing like a new one, all shiny, clean and empty of detritus that many of us tend to accumulate.

Re: Windows 7 question

Definitely!  I'm a bit of a Luddite - sticking with Office 2003 at the moment.  Many of my colleagues have been bleating about how bloated Office 2007 is.
