Windows 7 protection
I've just bought a 64 bit dual-core laptop with Windows 7 on it. 
The shop assistant (John Lewis) assured me that I have to run anti-virus and a firewall on it.
If this is true, (and I expect it is) - can anyone recommend any free software to do this?
I expect it will need to be 64 bit.
It will be behind a NAT router, but I expect Windows leaves its ports open..

It's horrible!
I've been spending hours removing rubbish software (Works, Office[trial], infantile games, Internet Explorer)...
I'm signed on with Administrator privileges but the UAC keeps upsetting me.
BTW The boot time and the login time are both inferior to Ubuntu.

Try AVG which is a good free anti virus prog although no doubt you'll find something wrong with it 
Do as OldJim says. (Windows firewall and MSE) and stop whinging 
It's fine, the "carp" is not Windows it's the hardware manufacturer. Windows 7 is not as bad as you think, just different (Polar bear vs Penguin?)
But I'd leave IE on as otherwise Windows Update may not work properly. Add your own favoured browser, I always have a "backup" anyway.
If you want a "real" Administrator (not a User with administrator rights) it can easily be done - but of course with no UAC it's easy to screw up!

Windows update appears to work - it offered me about 5 fixes to IE (declined!) and a load of other stuff.
Have to go now - it wants to reboot me again.

Damn thing insisted I apply fixes to software that I had removed.

It says DVD+RW disks are not acceptable 
Must be DVD write once...

Thanks for the help (but I still think that just because I have some spare RW disks, I can't use them).
I have never, ever bought a write once and throw-away DVD - yet!
