Windows 7 protection

I've just bought a 64 bit dual-core laptop with Windows 7 on it. Embarrassed
The shop assistant (John Lewis) assured me that I have to run anti-virus and a firewall on it. Cry
If this is true, (and I expect it is) - can anyone recommend any free software to do this? Cry
I expect it will need to be 64 bit. Cry
It will be behind a NAT router, but I expect Windows leaves its ports open.. Cry

Re: Windows 7 protection

No it doesn't need to be 64 bit
The built in firewall isn't bad so you could stay with it.
As regards a free antivirus - I normally advise Avira although the new Microsoft one isn't too bad

Re: Windows 7 protection

It's horrible!
I've been spending hours removing rubbish software (Works, Office[trial], infantile games, Internet Explorer)...
I'm signed on with Administrator privileges but the UAC keeps upsetting me.
BTW The boot time and the login time are both inferior to Ubuntu.  Grin

Re: Windows 7 protection

Try AVG which is a good free anti virus prog although no doubt you'll find something wrong with it Roll_eyes

Re: Windows 7 protection

Do as OldJim says. (Windows firewall and MSE) and stop whinging  Cheesy
It's fine, the "carp" is not Windows it's the hardware manufacturer. Windows 7 is not as bad as you think, just different (Polar bear vs Penguin?)
But I'd leave IE on as otherwise Windows Update may not work properly. Add your own favoured browser, I always have a "backup" anyway.
If you want a "real" Administrator (not a User with administrator rights) it can easily be done - but of course with no UAC it's easy to screw up!

Re: Windows 7 protection

Sorry - IE is gone - I hope!
(it demanded a reboot!)
Windows update appears to work - it offered me about 5 fixes to IE (declined!) and a load of other stuff.
Have to go now - it wants to reboot me again. Grin

Re: Windows 7 protection

Damn thing insisted I apply fixes to software that I had removed. Angry
Couldn't find a firewall - only a thing that allowed you to set whether you wanted dangerous OCX downloads. Angry
Exactly like XP.
Currently downloading Open Office - but someone seems to be throttling my connection. Cheesy
I tried to follow the procedure for copying the recovery partition to DVD.
It says DVD+RW disks are not acceptable Angry Sad Angry
Must be DVD write once...

Re: Windows 7 protection

Open Control Panel then System and Security then Windows Firewall
Being unable to copy a recovery partition to an RW disk seems very sensible

Re: Windows 7 protection

Thanks for the help (but I still think that just because I have some spare RW disks, I can't use them).
I have never, ever bought a write once and throw-away DVD - yet!
