WARNING to W7 users - MS Update is borked (see https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_7-update/error-code-80248015/aeae2fcd-100a... )
I have just rung UK support who -idiots - told me to reinstall Windows, and when I mentioned the thread above, suddenly went all quiet.
Fixed! Go to the fix.

Thanks for the heads-up on that one. I was going to update mine later on today but won't bother now.
Do you know if it affects both versions? I run Win 7 x64.
Growing old is inevitable...But growing up is optional.

Reading further down the replies, it appears not for everyone.

As of a few months ago, a minority of the Windows 7 computers and all the Vista computers I have seen had not manged to install Windows Updates since mid 2016. The process svchost would consume an entire processor core in a vain attempt to find updates whenever the afflicted computer was online. I don't know if Microsoft ever did anything about that particular issue.

@ReedRichards This isn't the same issue. The current one revolves around an M$ failure to update one of their own certificates.

@Browni I won't know until I check later, but it appears that stopping and restarting WU in services may have fixed it.

This also states that MS have fixed the problem.

Well, @Browni , it certainly hadn't been fixed at 0830 for me. I actually ran disk check this morning as I had a couple of unrelated niggles, and it wasn't fixed then.

We shall see, but I had to stop WU in services, alter options to 'never check', run a manual check, then reset WU to automatic, after which it did ANOTHER check, but it seems OK now.
I'll know more tomorrow , if I remember to go back to Control Panel.

The November update worked fine for me - December is released next week, I assume?
This site may be helpful for those having problems; it's got me out of trouble in the past when Windows Update seemed broken.
