It makes the "free upgrade" from Win 7 and 8 look very iffy

It had better be covered in loads of caveats and warnings!
Just out of interest I recently (without being aware of this Windows Update option) tried to update an existing Windows 7x64 installation using the Windows 10 preview on an ISO.
It failed with error codes that I could find no explanation for, but did roll back OK.
(This was a clean W7 install on a new hard disk and was part of my own testing; thinking ahead to the possibility of the free upgrade)

So you "upgrade" then find that:
"The Technical Preview expires on April 15, 2015" & "Microsoft plans to release the final version of Windows 10 in Fall 2015."
So what happens between April & October? If you can't roll back.

if no roll back you will have to install 7 via a disc , or if a laptop you can do from factory reset from boot  screen

Be interested to hear from someone who has tried to upgrade, use, downgrade by re-install over (rather than wipe & install which is what a factory reset would do)

Not sure what you mean by that?  
I would expect Windows 7 install DVD to say that it can't upgrade because it doesn't recognise the OS, so you would be forced to do a clean install.

Normally you install a copy of M$ on top of an existing one, so that way rather than wiping the installed apps & data.

I installed this and it gave me a rollback choice at every boot.  However, I had to choose the correct boot drive by pressing F12 otherwise it hung.  I rolled back.  All ok now.

Nope, only ONCE installed Vista, that made me move to Linux 
I am only interested as I will end up supporting it locally, even though I don't use it

They're releasing new builds every 4-6 weeks, and each one will have an expiry date further in the future. The builds auto update quite seamlessly to the latest available one when it's available. I must confess after having used it now for a few months it's very impressive how it's all coming together.
I'm not sure what the problem is about it coming down via Windows Update? You have to jump through a reasonable number of hoops to get it to do that, and even then you have to specifically choose it. It isn't like you're going to wake up one day and find that Windows 10 has installed itself.
