Re: Windows 10 , free

Yes, but from Microsoft's perspective it would be exactly the same as a PC that had been turned off for a long while.
If doing that I'd also think about a separate hard disk for the upgraded system.

so i presume after 12 months it will not pass windows activation .

That could prove problematic if a reinstallation needs to be done unless a record is kept of a previous activation within the first 12 months.

Re: Windows 10 , free

Not sure if I have OEM or not - bought the laptop as a refurb with Win7 on it. How do you tell? (Don't have a disk.)
I use Office Enterprise Edition but what is 'Windows Enterprise'?
I'm def tempted by this offer if its possible to do.

The Product ID should be in the form xxxxx-xxx-xxxxxxx-xxxxx.  What are the 3 characters in the second group (if those 3 characters are OEM, then you have an OEM version).

This has me worried http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/wiki/windows8_1-windows_install/frequently-asked-question...

This is more than a one-time upgrade: once a Windows device is upgraded to Windows 10, we will continue to keep it current for the supported lifetime of the device – at no additional charge. With Windows 10, the experience will evolve and get even better over time. We’ll deliver new features when they’re ready, not waiting for the next major release. We think of Windows as a Service – in fact, one could reasonably think of Windows in the next couple of years as one of the largest Internet services on the planet.
It depends how they define the life of the device but it is almost guaranteed that upgrading the motherboard will be classed as a new machine and it is possible that replacing the motherboard with an identical one after the warranty has expired will also class it as end of life of the machine

Re: Windows 10 , free

I dont think so Jim , I upgrade my hardware regular and reinstall win 7 and all i get is to reactivate Via the phone which i have done several times with no problems.
what i think we will see is just a basic OS and then if you need to add what they call their Apps they will charge you  .

Re: Windows 10 , free

But I assume that you don't have an OEM License which is a dead ringer for this

Re: Windows 10 , free

I've not had any issues following hardware changes (new MB, CPU, RAM) with an OEM version of W7 Home. A call and an explanation sorts it very quickly.

Re: Windows 10 , free

In which case we can only wait for the details as I don't see how Microsoft can generate income from effectively only supplying new sales of computers given the very low cost of an OEM license to the big computer suppliers
