Win7 pro keeps crashing

Well... not exactly crash while using but it tends to be to do with hibernation.
I sleep / hibernate the pc every night when i go to bed. Around every 1.5 - 2 weeks it'll refuse to wake up again, reboot after POST, go through POST again and boot windows as a fresh start. When i get onto the desktop i get some message about windows recovering from an unexpected shutdown... tech details are:

Also sometimes the system (while using it) will reboot. It's only happened two or three times (again after a lot of hibernation / wake sequences)... not sure if its related but thought i'd mention it.

Re: Win7 pro keeps crashing

Is this the system where you've never installed any Windows Updates?

Re: Win7 pro keeps crashing

To me i would say the problem lies with the sleep / hibernate

Re: Win7 pro keeps crashing

Sounds something like an issue I experienced with undetermined RAM fault.
I had 16GB installed and was having a growing increase in freeze & shutdown issues, MemTest detected nothing but running with just pairs of 8GB I found one pair was causing the issues.  Pulled that pair and all well.........I also tried them as pairs in each paired slots to 'test' the motherboard.
For the record I have now ordered a fresh matched set of 16GB (4 x 4GB) Crucial Ballistix Sport as I do miss the speed that 16GB gave me with my photo editing.
Therefore just maybe a RAM issue, perhaps?

Funny you mention that because when the system decides to boot from scratch I do get the black "Windows did not shut down properly" screen with the safe mode / networking / start normally options.

Funny you mention that as I have noticed it tends to be when i hibernate after using a lot of ram (virtual computer plus several browsers). I will obviously need to keep an eye on this and see if it happens again tonight as I've got the same amount running right now. Maybe the system doesn't get enough time to write all the data to the HDD when i hibernate? - I wouldn't have thought that were the case... especially if its a process within windows I would think it would just terminate it instead of trashing my windows session but who knows...
I'll keep an eye on these two issues.

Re: Win7 pro keeps crashing

A few more suggestions. I think it's maybe a Power Setting for the HDD.  Try this..
Control Panel > Power Options > click on Change when the Computer Sleeps > Click on Change Advanced Power Settings.  Make sure that Hard Disk dropdown > Turn Off Hard Disk After ..  is set to Never. Might also be worth checking the other options in the dropdown list to make sure that there's nothing silly in there, especially in the Hybrid sleep tree. This is known to be iffy.
And also look at the Device Manager to make sure that you have only one keyboard and pointing device installed. Disable / Uninstall any that ere extra to requirements and check that those that are left are checked to wake up the computer.
One last thought..  are you by any chance using Avast Antivirus? This seems to be problematic in completing tasks after the PC has been put to sleep, and is known to cause crashes of this type. The W7 tick-counter (timeout timer) triggers but can't do anything because the PC is having a nap. If you are, I would suggest removing it using https://www.avast.com/uninstall-utility.
Other than that, try scaring the living daylights out of it!  Crazy

Re: Win7 pro keeps crashing

Interesting that you mention Avast as I am indeed using it.
The trouble is i've no idea what to replace it with - i've grown to trust avast a lot over the competition..

Avira seems to get good words..
http://www.avira.com/en/downloads
But make sure you use the proper Avast removal tool first.

Re: Win7 pro keeps crashing

might be hardware related...
install the free version of hdtune and look at the smart info for bad blocks, also run a disc scan with it, takes quite a while, but will show if disk is failing
also boot memtest and check the ram for issues, might have become unseated or just be failing
you also might want to use http://www.macrium.com/reflectfree.aspx and take a backup copy
