Well USBDeview worked a treat..  Uninstalled a load of devices I never use anymore, and also the software for the suspect USB stick.  Put it back in, it installed device software, and worked within seconds..

I have severe download difficulties at the moment, yet to be resolved, which deter me downloading anything right now. As soon as Anotherone gets home from visiting me in West Wales we might see light at the end of a very long tunnel. When the dust settles will have a go.

You can make Device Manager show everything with a couple of steps:
1. Create a system environment variable called devmgr_show_nonpresent_devices with its value set to 1.
2. Then open Device Manager and tick "Show Hidden Devices" under View in the menu.
