Why not a smartphone friendly website?

Simple question but probably a complicated answer  Undecided
I use my Galaxy a lot but the Plusnet portal and these fora are rubbish and I have to use a tablet or computer. C'mon Plusnet get up to date!

Re: Why not a smartphone friendly website?

A great many sites have a mobile phone / tablet version as carrying a PC around the street can be a real pain. Wink

Re: Why not a smartphone friendly website?

and those sites all plainly suck
iplayer is now pretty bad after its touch screen optimisation update
skysports aweful
digitalspy aweful
its ok when the desktop layout is preserved and a seperate version is made for touch, but not ok when the main layout is changed for touch.

Re: Why not a smartphone friendly website?

I personally hate it when browsing a web site on my iPhone, the site decides it knows better than me and displays a phone version.
I then have to mess around finding where the 'desktop version' option is.

Re: Why not a smartphone friendly website?

@chris
Thanks for that -What I expected but I was surprised no one else had asked such an obvious question!
By lurking on these forums I deduce that my experience is pretty typical. My family covers three generations and a number of different  platforms. iPads, iPhones, laptops, PC et al and I usually am using what others allow me to. But I need to be able to check stuff and I note smartphone friendly is the new norm!  Smiley

Re: Why not a smartphone friendly website?

You don't need a separate site, it will be achieved by a mobile friendly forum skin (theme). This is usually just a more simplified layout, not any 'bangs & whistles' type of thing.
That's RPM to you!!

What you described is exactly what I dont want, its a myth that a site design can work well for both, designers think they do but they dont, simplification is exactyl what I dont want, sites look and feel aweful with it.
So either keep desktop focused or seperate in my view.
What you describe is what digitalspy did and its a disaster on there.

Re: Why not a smartphone friendly website?

Having a new 'mobile' skin does not necessarily mean the end of the current 'desktop' style. They will coexist happily alongside each other.
Just because one forum has done away with the desktop style altogether, does not mean every other will do the same by implementing a mobile friendly version.
So in other words, your opposition to this makes no sense, as I would think this desktop version will still remain.
That's RPM to you!!

Re: Why not a smartphone friendly website?

Our front page looks fine on both Desktop and Mobile devices, so it does work.

Re: Why not a smartphone friendly website?

Chris front page on desktop? my views.
not using full screen width, I have a wide screen monitor but its using a width suited to phones.
fonts too big, so have to do scrolling, could be shrunk then  be better, but I guess was made big for phones Smiley
