Re: Why are these pictures blurred in FF 38.01

Hmm... very interesting Jim..... maybe it is "linked" with my thread about the missing scroll bar and "menu" bar on FF38.01.
I am actually using FF36.01 and the linky you provided gives a nice clear pic and the scroll bar and the "menu" bar also appear...

Well it may be down to your specific version as I am using WaterFox (v38.0)and there is no blurring that I can see. The results are comparable with IE (v11.0.19), what are you actually seeing?

Re: Why are these pictures blurred in FF 38.01

When I loaded the linked page in Waterfox, initially the image was blurred but less than a second later it snapped to sharp.
Isn't this a case of a low resolution version initially loading followed very quickly by the higher resolution version?
I've seen this a lot on Google images.

That's what happens with IE11 when I try it (but it happens too quickly to try to capture with a screen grab.)

Yes I see that now, I missed it as I had to manually select the tab the link opened in, but on creating a new tab (WaterFox) and pasting the link in I see the blurring effect albeit for less than a second. But looking at the source of the document there are references to high and low video formats so your assumption above may well be correct.

Same here in FF 38.0.1. Probably less than half a second of the low resolution image.

Re: Why are these pictures blurred in FF 38.01

I'm guessing that someone on an old dial-up connection would see a blurred image for a very long time Sad

Re: Why are these pictures blurred in FF 38.01

The blurred image would be down to the jpg.
Progressive jpg I believe it's called where it's saved as a series of scans.
Quote
A simple or "baseline" JPEG file is stored as one top-to-bottom scan of the
image.  Progressive JPEG divides the file into a series of scans.  The first
scan shows the image at the equivalent of a very low quality setting, and
therefore it takes very little space.  Following scans gradually improve the
quality.  Each scan adds to the data already provided, so that the total
storage requirement is roughly the same as for a baseline JPEG image of the
same quality as the final scan.  (Basically, progressive JPEG is just a
rearrangement of the same data into a more complicated order.)
The advantage of progressive JPEG is that if an image is being viewed
on-the-fly as it is transmitted, one can see an approximation to the whole
image very quickly, with gradual improvement of quality as one waits longer;
this is much nicer than a slow top-to-bottom display of the image.  The
disadvantage is that each scan takes about the same amount of computation to
display as a whole baseline JPEG file would.  So progressive JPEG only makes
sense if one has a decoder that's fast compared to the communication link.
(If the data arrives quickly, a progressive-JPEG decoder can adapt by
skipping some display passes.  Hence, those of you fortunate enough to have
T1 or faster net links may not see any difference between progressive and
regular JPEG; but on a modem-speed link, progressive JPEG is great.)
