Having said that I find the boot up of Vista to a useable state is getting slower and slower but I can't face a reinstall

Quote from: Santiago I wonder if SP2 will make vista work?
If that were the case they wouldn't be in such a hurry to get Windows 7 out the door.

I would put XP on her machine but I don't have a spare copy.
If any of the vista converts out there would like to donate your old and unused copy of XP........

If it was a Dell any old Dell XP OEM CD would work (desktop or laptop) without any validation issues.... (just need to get the drivers).

In theory the Dell ones work on any manufacturers kit, but you need to copy the files, and alter the Manufacturer=Dell part to whatever manufacturer made your kit, then burn to a CD ready to install from.
Clearly in order to do such a thing you must take responsibility for ensuring that you are fully compliant with any licensing and regulatory obligations/restrictions.
I have managed to do this with Compaq, Fujitsu Siemens and HP Kit
IANAL
