Which Router ?

Which wireless router do you think is best, Tomson TG585V7 or the Netgear DG834G. Undecided

Re: Which Router ?

Well I can't comment on the Tomson as I've never owned one but I've had a DG834G for several years and it's been as solid as a rock.

Re: Which Router ?

There are at least 5 different versions of the DG834G and that can affect the ADSL side if nothing else due to different chipsets.

Re: Which Router ?

Thanks Bob,I have also been using one for about 8 years, last few weeks I have been dropping sync and about the only thing left to test is my router. i am undecided on whether to buy the Netgear g834v5 or have the free thompson from Plusnet.Have been reading various reviews on both and the Netgear appears to be well in front..
Thanks for your input HP ,my fault I forgot to put V5 on the model number. Roll_eyes

From Ben Trimble on another thread:
Quote from: BenTrimble
One of the main reasons we [Plusnet] went with Thomson for our new routers is because they provided better sync rates on longer lines compared to others, including Netgear...

Personally, I've found Netgear routers tend to be amongst the more reliable, long-term.

Re: Which Router ?

You could always buy a second hand DG834G , I got mine off eBay for around £15 I think  Smiley
Mine's a v3 by the way.

Re: Which Router ?

Me too, a few times, and I've never had any bother with any of them.
The deciding factor for me is that the Netgear permits remote management and emailing logs.  The Thomson also allows remote management, but the password is reset when the router is power cycled and remote access can only be re-enabled from a local connection.
In my case, one remote site has some specialist hardware, and ADSL line plus router and no PC.  In that case, the Netgear can be managed remotely

Re: Which Router ?

I've always used LInksys Routers to be honest.
Never had any issues with them Smiley - Even a router i've had for like 5 years, is still working!

Re: Which Router ?

I've been through a lot of wireless routers in the past (D-link, netgear and ones with names I can't pronounce) - it is often the WiFi part of the router that lets me down. I've got this setup here now and works great:

Re: Which Router ?

I've used a DG834Gv3 for years but I'll soon be changing to a router hard wired to a switch then WAP. Not entirely sure whether to go for -n or -g as my current hardware is -g only but I might upgrade in the future.

Re: Which Router ?

I've got Netgear DG834G V3, DGN2000 and recently tried the DG834G V5. Both the DGN2000 and V3 are absolutely fine but the V5 was very poor.  The V5 has the conexant chipset rather than the Broadcom and always synced lower than the other two.
Spent two days flashing software, changing channels etc but it kept dropping connections or the wireless channel or just freezing up. They have removed some functionality on it as well (emailing logs etc) . Wasn't impressed at all so now it gathers dust.

Re: Which Router ?

So how much faster is -n than -g? and do you really notice with a standard broadband connection?

I use Netgear DGN1000 wireless N, Id say wireless N is slightly better but not by much, Streams better any videos I watch Via Xbox live, Picture quality is better.
Wireless G=54mbps
Wireless N=300mbps.
