Weird permissions query

I know this isn't a PN issue in any way, but can anyone explain it?

I went on to the East Midlands Trains site to book a journey for later this week, and when I got to the stage where I needed to login, I clicked the button and got this:

EMTlog.PNG

I then tried exactly the same on the EMT iPad app, and it worked instantly. Both machines are on Wi-Fi through the same router.

I have tried again to access my account on EMT (through the home page,  not the ticket purchase route as previous), and login details, and have been met with the same message.

NOTE: I don't know when this manifested itself, but do know it worked with exactly the same IP and login details at the beginning of the month.

Any suggestions/explanations welcome

John

Re: Weird permissions query

Could be a cookie problem - have you tried a different browser on the same machine ?

Also double check the time / date on your machine as this can also cause issues although generally only with https:// sites.

Re: Weird permissions query

Re-reading the original post, I'd expect the url for that login page to start https:// - you don't really want to be logging in to a non secure site.

Are you accessing the site from an old bookmark or are you going directly through their home page ? I have a forum that does weird things if you use an old bookmark as it used to be on a non secure server but now it has moved to secure pages I can't use old bookmarks.

Re: Weird permissions query

I've just tried that URL myself and it redirects to a https:// url - try it again but add the "s" after your http and see if it works.

Re: Weird permissions query

Just tried my PaleMoon browser - that worked with no problem.Huh

Date and time are correct - to the second.

Cleared all EMT cookies and tried again in Firefox - my default browser -  with exactly the same response.

Re: Weird permissions query

That's your PC ruled out then - did you try changing the http:// to https:// at the beginning of the address to see if that makes a difference ?

Re: Weird permissions query

The url in the search bar that shows on the log-in page is an 'https' but for some reason it seems to default to 'http' as shown in the error message in the screenshot - even though I cleared all cookies for EMT and accessed it via a 'clean' version of the home page - still confused!

Re: Weird permissions query

Very strange - I've tried it with Firefox, Chrome and Edge and they all seem to go to the login page without a problem. Even if I try logging in through a non secure connection I get redirected to a secure page.

We're maybe a step closer but I've run out of ideas I'm afraid.

Re: Weird permissions query

I can get to the login page - which is 'https' with no problem, it's when I actually hit the login button I get the problem.

Re: Weird permissions query

Ah right - I wonder if the page has been badly cached by Firefox and is trying to access a stale URL - unlikely but possible.

If you right click on the page and view source, do a search for http:// and see if there are any links to the non secure login - again unlikely but possible.

The version I have seems ok - the only non secure links are to things like help pages and such.

Re: Weird permissions query

Good thought, @picbits, but as I think I said earlier, I had no problems accessing the account page earlier this month using exactly the same saved links.

Just checked the page source for the login page, and all bits that require 'https' have it.

Re: Weird permissions query

The only other thing I can think of to try here is a FF refresh, but as I do have alternative options and a load of customisations on FF, I will wait and see if anyone else has an idea - @bobpullen? (Sorry to be cheeky)

Re: Weird permissions query

Fix
You can temporarily launch Firefox with most things disabled/reverted to default, without carrying out a full refresh. Just launch in safe mode as described here - https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/troubleshoot-firefox-issues-using-safe-mode

Re: Weird permissions query

I'm nearly 90% convinced I might have cracked it - looks like uBlock Origin must be blocking something, as the error din't occur in safe mode, and disabling it on the login page seems to have cured the problem - although I had a friend of mine (who also uses uBlock) check it, and she had no problems - with uBlock enabled.Crazy2
