Website without www

Just looking at a site set up for a friend (by a professional) and I noticed that the address doesn't have www. in front of it - any idea as why and indeed how this is done.
By the way I know he is a professional as he uses iframes, tables and flash.  Roll_eyes (2.6MB just to look at 4 small pictures which should be less than 100kB each)

Re: Website without www

all www. is a subdomain -  might well work with and without it.
As long as there is a DNS record it'll be fine.

Re: Website without www

subdomain.domain.topleveldomain
www.plus.net
community.plus.net
usergroup.plus.net
mywebsite.mydomainname.com

There is no reason to call a website "www", you can call it whatever you like.
Addresses on the internet read right to left, from least specific to most specific. (Ignoring /slashes for the moment...)
In the context of Plusnet - the .net part refers to the organisation responsible for handling registrations of .net domains.
plus. is the name that PN have registered.
All the other things to the left of "plus." are simply subdomain names (or child domain names) which allow them to organise things.
www. is the corporate and potential customer site - the default if you like, the one which people would most likely go to.
portal. is the customer portal
community. is this site
usergroup. is the PUG site.
careers. is the careers site.
All of these are within the control of Plusnet, and do not require them to do anything other than register the DNS records on their Authorative DNS servers. - They are entirely within the control of PN, and are guaranteed to be unique to PN on the internet.

Conversely, if you want something akin to folders within a site, you would tend to use /subfolder
eg /forum/ refers to the /forum/ part of the community. subdomain of the company plus.

Re: Website without www

(EDIT: Forget PostCodes and Automatic sorting for this example please...) Crazy
Think of it like your home address.
It is sorted by looking at the least specific part first.
If somebody abroad was sending you a letter, the foreign postal service would not worry about anything except that it was for GB - thus they'd send it to the GB International post sorting office.
Once there, they might look at the next most specific, and send it to the South Yorks sorting office, who might send it to the Sheffield Sorting office.
Eventually it gets to your postman, because it is on his 'round' - he then sorts it into the order he wants to deliver it.
You could add something else to your address to make it known who the letter was for - say your name.

It kinda works a little like that.
You can ask people to address post to whoever they like at your house, since that part is only interpreted by you when you pick the post up.

plus.net. ensures that traffic for PN gets referred to whoever PN have said is authorative (in their case, them....) for their domain - then once the traffic arrives with them, they can point it to the place they want.
www. is perhaps comparable to "The Occupier" in my example - it would get to the right place in the majority of cases.

Re: Website without www

It is one of my favourite words - particularly since it so often applies to me.

More importantly, have we succeeded in explaining the pertinent point?
