But only if you can lay your hands on a pirate/unofficial copy of Windows 7.

But if you could lay your hands on a pirate etc copy of Windows 7, it would be a cracked copy.
So you wouldn't need to mess around for 120 days...
Mind you, even if someone gave me a free legal copy with the serial stuff, I wouldn't have any use for it,
except for flogging it on ebay.

Not necessarily.  Windows 7 RTM has been made available to Microsoft Technet subscribers so if you have a friend of a friend who subscribes to Technet you might be able to get hold of a copy.  Or they might have carelessly left a copy on the internet for others to find and download.  Although Microsoft gives you 30 days to activate Windows (extendible up to 120 days, apparently) I don't think this was ever intended to be a try-before-you-buy system.  If a "cracked" copy of Windows 7 of Windows 7 is a pirate copy, surely a temporary copy of Windows 7 that is not obtained through normal channels is a temporary pirate copy?

Unfortunately you would have to spend a few days reading all their EULA's and retain the services of a barrister to determine which methods of distribution are "legal" and which are not.

I'm with you all the way there.  But if you can download a copy of Microsoft software from a Microsoft web site (or buy the disk) then you can be fairly sure you Microsoft allow you to have a copy.  If you can only get your Microsoft software from some back door or roundabout route you can be fairly sure Microsoft don't want you to have a copy.

Back in the days of Windows 3.1 etc M$ didn't really care how you got their "OS".
They made their money by selling Office and a few other products.

Speaking of Windows 7, does anyone know when it goes commercial and you can buy it in the shops?

You can of course pre-order it now, and have been able to for some time.

That's £64 in my book.  Cheesy
(and 1p in the charity bucket)
Nonetheless I'm thinking of buying another at that price - already got 1 ordered for just over £40. Grin
