BIOS formats it EXT2. Windows doesn't recognise it. Always a bummer when that happens

the bios format type is irrelevant because windows will see it as an operational unformatted drive and you can use disk manger in dos shell to sort that out if you cannot perform the required task through the computer management console.
the real problem is the high likelihood of it not working in this instance either way due to some part having failed /
just because your paranoid doesn't mean they aren't out to get you
