ad aware is not an anti-virus program. avg from grisoft, or avast, are two good free offerings. zone alarm is a good firewall. there are other free programs to help you protect yourself online.
all protection software will slow the system while they are running, but they are necessary to ensure safety online.
as a minimum, when using windows, i ran avg, zone alarm, ad aware, spybot and spywareblaster.

Comodo Internet security from here http://www.comodo.com ; gets my vote, the latest version has AV built in and IMO best all round protection you can get for free.

Many of the new Av have a firewall, adaware, and virus protection like Nod32 and this means it all one program which wont conflict.
One of the best things is Winpatrol from http://www.winpatrol.com/
Its not the same as other spyware products all it does is watch your system and wont let anything change the startup or some system files without you giving permission. By doing this it prevent most attacks were as adaware trys to get rid of the attack after its happened.
