Virgin Media

I am not looking to move, so do not panic PN :P.... well, not yet anyway Tongue
I was interested in peoples feedback on virgin media, i must admit the 20Mb and now 50Mb speeds are very appealing, especially for a gamer!.  As anybody had past experience? currently my line sits at 5500 so i am happy as larry, but are these fibre networks just going to swallow ISP's like PN ?
I have a feeling that from a customer point of view, the size of Virgin Media may not help with customer care etc.  Busy lines.

Re: Virgin Media

What does speed have to do with gaming?
Surely latency is your enemy?

Re: Virgin Media

Latency is the enemy, but it is also nice to have a good line for streaming and downloading.
How much data is actually sent / received from an average xbox game such as COD per hour online?

Very little I expect.

I understand that - but you say that the speeds must be appealing for a gamer.
Surely you mean they are appealing for somebody who wants to stream lots of things concurrently, or who wants to download lots of things concurrently.
I accept I'm being a tad more pedantic than is needed, but it's worth not perpetuating the myth that gaming requires a fat pipe - it doesn't, it needs a fast pipe. How many mbps is not the most useful measure for gamers after a point. Whereas ms per packet round trip to the gaming server is *always* important.

Re: Virgin Media

We used to Have Asbo Dog on here, he was an avid X Box gamer who had a speed of just over 1 M, he was also on Unlimited and was downloading videos, by the sound of it 24 hrs a day  he had no problems

He's only not here now because he downloaded the whole internet, and then decided he had no further need for a broadband connection...

Re: Virgin Media

Is that not an apple iNET, a box that has the whole of the internet contained so you have no need for a connection...  I must get one.
Currently i have interleaving on as well, but i am hitting an A rating on pingtest, avg 17ms.  To be honest the best test for me would be to actually turn the xbox on and play COD, but be warned!!! if i start jumping all over the place and some america kid starts laughing at me.... i shall be back!

Re: Virgin Media

if you are an ADSL customer (dont have cable) DO NOT join Virgin Media, if you value anything good about your Internet (like ping or a usable speed) you might be interested to read this thread from the virgin forums, note that there are well over 400 replies, and only 2 are from anyone from virgin, and its all just cut and paste "yeah we might get it fixed soon we might not"
i've just moved from Virgin to Plusnet because of the terrible service, and god forbid, i will never go back, not even if they were the last ISP in britain, i will even go without internet if necessary

Re: Virgin Media

due to moving house and the current provider being post office and them trying to charge £400 for a mac code and lost router am stuck with them, thoe VM supplys this area but i would still have an adsl connection with these line stats for gaming as well as a VM fibre connection for sole use of bandwidth, i wouldnt tuch VM for any latency apps
hopefully i can get back PN one day as the post office network (bt retails) goes to pots on a sunday and gaming is a NO NO

I'm not too sure about that! I've no hard figures but since my 2 boys have had X-Box live I'm exceeding my (15GB) allowance every month (usually by ~5GB). Previously usage was no problem & I'm looking to change/upgrade my account sometime soon.

Are you sure your two little darling are playing games, or are they playing games with you and watching Youtube etc?

Re: Virgin Media

usaly we say between 20-50mb an hour for xbox gaming, depending on the game. have a look on your vmbu in the member centre and it will give a good idea how much gaming is being done on your account
