I used AnyVideo Converter on my Windows... and it is brilliant...but it is one of the programs I cannot get to work on my Mint 15 Olivia....
It downloaded and installed an Icon on the desktop, but clicking on it to open results in a wait and nothing.
.
any ideas...? ? ?
( mfc42.dll solved a couple of others like this, but not AnyVideoConverter)...

Try starting it from a terminal window and see if there are any clues in the terminal output.

Not sure what the command line is to start it on Linux but normally you'd open a terminal window and just type the command to start it.
Not an application I've used so I couldn't help further I'm afraid

What do you want to convert to what?
There is:- (all Linux ones no M$ ones)
Arista transcoder (in the repo - via synaptic) converts most things to most things
Handbrake get it from the ppa (search for handbrake ppa) this is good for mkv's
Acid DVD ripper (synaptic) as it says
Several others as well, but that is a short list of good ones.

Have installed Arista... but it is really only for converting to "devices" rather than file type conversions....
With AnyVideoConverter... When I click on the Icon to "open" it with "Open with other application"
I get a screen saying
No application available to open Any VIdeo Converter.
click Find applications online
then get
Installing mime type handlers isn't supported
To search and install software which can open certain file types you have to install app-install-data.
Failed to look for Applications on-line.....
GDBus.Error:org.freedesktop.Packagekit.Modify.InternalError: To search and install software which can open certain file types you have to install app-install-data.
So what do I do now? to install app-install-data ? ? ?

You can create your own conversion with Arista.
Click on create conversion The large +
Click on the + at the bottom of the screen
then setup your resolution etc, it defaults to mp4 as the type.
Give it a name and save it.
Then drop your flv's into the window and choose your conversion as the pre-set.

A Native and handy tool for video or audio conversion in linux is GStreamer.
It's a command line based tool, with lots of options, but is very powerful.
It's very handy when you've got a lot of files you want to convert.
