The OPOC has been in development for several years, and the company claims it’s 30 percent lighter, one quarter the size and achieves 50 percent better fuel economy than a conventional turbo diesel engine.

Re: Very interesting car engine development

Well if its true its a good thing but with the rate petrol is going it will be extinct within its first few years anyway.
I need a new signature... i'm bored of the old one!

A lot of claims: lighter, smaller & more efficient.  This is the same technology as the 'deltic' diesels of many years ago (except the cylinder layout) - good but not exactly ground-shattering.

What goes around, comes around.
Though with a bit of modern microprocessor control over turbo/injectors etc. it's amazing what can be done with a diesel engine these days, so in combination who knows?
And as for the Deltic, I remember the weird "buzz" they used to make as they rocketed by us young lads trainspotting on the Midland Line.

Re: Very interesting car engine development

We have to be careful with a lot of these claims as most of the research is funded by the car companies.
In ideal conditions and using an expert driver considerable MPG figures can be obtained but these are well above what an average driver would get in today's traffic.
Years ago I had a Golf GTi Mark 2 which had an on board computer, amazing by how much the MPG figure altered from average when driving above or below 30 MPH.
It could get down to less than 10MPG when moving in slow traffic.
We are born into history and history is born into us.

Re: Very interesting car engine development

two-stroke engines are nasty, smelly, noisy beasts.  deisels are not so noisy these days, but every bit as polluting.  the two-stroke will likely be as bad.
prod the japanese and others to get on building those exoskeletal aids such that we can all have one.  we can all run to and fro with much less effort and use our own bodies as engines.

Re: Very interesting car engine development

Hmm there's some confusion here over 2-stroke.
I think what Artificer was referring to is the petrol variety lubricated by oil mixed with the fuel. Horrible and smelly indeed.  Angry
Bears no resemblance to anything else discussed here.
(though a big Deltic could chuck out some muck at full chat!)

I bought it when a teenager for £2. It had a gearbox problem. I took it to pieces, couldn't get it back together so sold it. Embarrassed
