May not be it and I could be barking up the wrong tree, but the Wiki page does mention some specific removal tools.

Quote from: PJ I know you say it's Windows XP SP2 but it's still worth popping around and looking up Services.MSC (from the Run menu) to see if Messenger is disabled or not.
Yes the messenger service is disabled thanks PJ. The windows fill the entire screen with the usual minimize, maximize and close buttons in the top right. They all have text across the top blue border that say Microsoft Security Centre, this is what fooled him as anything that says Microsoft must be ok and a new one opens about every minute or so. Next time I'm there will get a screenshot and have a look at the host file. Thanks again PJ

Thanks for that PJ I was going to look at MSCONFIG but completely forgot about it. Will have a look at ProcessLibrary.
Quote from: PJ Also worth having a look at MSCONFIG and going through the StartUp list.

I thought you said you'd scanned with an anti-virus solution but actually you haven't mentioned this- if there's no up to date AV installed then it might be worth installing AVG free.
Yes sorry should have mentioned he does have AVG installed fully up to date and this too finds nothing. I did suggest a full re-install maybe the drastic solution he wasn't keen to say the least.

Yep the times when I've had to try and fix a PC (fortunately not that often), I've gone through the registry manually and had a look at what's in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run, and looked for anything dodgy.
But I think that's what MSCONFIG shows in the Startup tab anyway, so it's easier to use that.
By dodgy, I look for anything with is either nondescript, or trying to appear like something legit but doesn't look quite right.
For example, something like C:\WINDOWS\HYJDSJ.EXE (what is that?), or something like C:\WINDOWS\SysProcess.EXE (a generic name which seems like it is hiding something).
I've managed to get rid of some spyware by doing that. Often a google search on the filename and extension will bring up some hits on what the process actually is, and you'll soon see if it's bringing up results relating to it being a legitimate file or whether the consensus is that it might be spyware.
There used to be a site I used which will give process information, but I can't find it anymore.

Quote from: grimme Have found another link that walks through removal using Smitfraud fix and AVG Antispyware. It looks involved, but the instructions are thorough and it did seem to solve the original Spyware problem.
Thanks will have a look but I think I might have seen this too.

Thanks Alex This was one of the first places I looked and there's not much in there and whats there all checks out ok. I've still got to look in MSCONFIG but doubt it very much if I will find anything.

Quote from: jelv Quite frankly, for the amount of time you are messing about, plus the uncertainty at the end if it all as to whether it is absolutely clean I'd have stuck another disk in to copy across the data to be rescued, then formatted and started again.
Thats what I suggested but he is not too keen but the way it's going it might be the only solution.
