Unknown virus

Would appreciate some help trying to sort out a friends laptop which has been infected. Sadly I cannot find out what the nasty is as no virus scanners will run and computer is unable to connect to any anti virus websites. Have run various searches to pin down the problem without luck.
However I have been able to run Hijackthis and this is the log:

I think that could be your problem mate...

C:\WINDOWS\System32\igfxtray.exe
C:\WINDOWS\System32\hkcmd.exe
C:\WINDOWS\System32\00THotkey.exe
C:\WINDOWS\LTSMMSG.exe
Although, other sites I have looked at says it related to a preinstalled application on Toshiba Satelitte Lappys.. so it might be a false positive too.

Re: Unknown virus

Thank you very much.
Had some measure of success but sadly did not totally conquer the problem despite many hours of trying. I have therefore wiped the harddrive and started again.
Best wishes and thanks again for the quick response.

Re: Unknown virus

If it was a virus it shows AVG and Zonealarm weren't doing there job(Zonalarm has AV included on most version).
With those both running it would be surprising if it was a virus

Re: Unknown virus

Coming in after the event here, but I was struck that you said you weren't able to run any virus scanners (what happened to them when you tried?) but you were also saying that you knew there was an infection, so I wondered how you knew that (you didn't tell us what the symptoms were); and also that the computer was unable to connect to the internet.
I'd have been inclined to get a Linux live cd (Knoppix, Puppy, DSL) just to check the machine could boot and connect to the internet and then maybe use ClamAV or similar to check the Windows partition for viruses, rootkits etc.
It might be that there was a file or registry corruption that caused whatever problem your friend was seeing
Still, lets hope the wipe and re-install fixed it Smiley
