Uninstalling MSE from XP

I am trying to help someone who cant afford to replace their pc, and their present hardware cannot use Win 7. I am trying to replace MSE with some other AV facility. I have loaded AVG 2014 Free (not sure I like it - it seems excessively complicated to use), but having got it working, I have tried to uninstall MSE (if for no other reason than to get rid of that irritating message that comes up every few minutes about MS no longer supporting XP). However, uninstall keeps failing.
Does anyone have any suggestions for persuading MSE to go, please?

You can install version 4.4 of MSE and provided you block the 4.5 update you won't get the irritating message on XP.
