Re: Unable To Renew Ip Address

Have you tried a repair on it? Right click the wireless icon and select 'repair'.
You could also get that if your WEP / WPA key is incorrect, has that changed lately?

Re: Unable To Renew Ip Address

Set the IP to static within your normal range and this may cure it if its the router not sending dhcp properly

Re: Unable To Renew Ip Address

I've had some Netgear routers have issues with the inbuilt DHCP server in the past (thats the part that issues IP addresses automatically)
One fix is to issue a fixed IP as suggested by @samuria, however I found a reboot (power cycle) of the router did the trick.
You could try that first (unless you already did)
If you still need instructions on assigning an IP manually after trying this - shout up and one of us will walk you through it.

Re: Unable To Renew Ip Address

JamesG,do you mean switch the Router off , and then back on, or reset it? if you mean switch it off power then back on, have done this several times. Selkirk.

Re: Unable To Renew Ip Address

To set a static ip find the ip of your router (its the ip you type in to setup the router in ie). Assuming you have xp control panel  network connections and find the device you are using ie wireless connection click on that then properties. Under the network setting it will be ticked to get an ip automaticly change this and set the ip to the router ip +1  so if the router is 192.168.1.1 set yours to 192.168.1.2 subnet set to 255.255.255.0 and the gateway to the routers ip.
It should then work if its fussy you may need to reboot. Depending on the device there may be another way to set it

Re: Unable To Renew Ip Address

I'd not actually set it to router ip+1 as this is probably in the range assigned by DHCP and may cause a conflict if another PC or device on the network requests an IP address.
Best is to set it to something like x.x.x.100, which should be out of the way of any DHCP allocations (better still is to restrict the DHCP adderss pool in the router configuration and make sure any address you allocate is outside that).

To change the settings you need to go to Control Panel>Network Connections and right click on your wireless connection.
Click on properties and, in the box that follows, highlight Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) and select properties (underneath the white box).
On the screen that follows select "Use the following IP address" and enter (assuming your router is on 192.168.1.1)
IP address 192.168.1.100
Subnet mask 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway 192.168.1.1
Then select "use the following DNS Servers"
and enter 212.159.6.9 in the "Preferred DNS Server"
and 212.159.6.10 in the "Alternate DNS Server"
Click OK and then OK again in the previous box.
If your router has a start IP of anything other than 192.168.1.1, you'll need to change the above accordingly.
e.g. If it was 192.168.0.1 the settings would be:
IP address 192.168.0.100
Subnet Mask 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway 192.168.0.1
Preferred and alternate DNS as above.

Re: Unable To Renew Ip Address

Can you from a cmd prompt type ipconfig /all and post the results and can you again from the prompt type tracert 194.119.131.66 and post the results.
Have you got any encryption on and are you sure its set ok ie the pc and the router have the same key and levels?
Try taking the encryption off.
What is the signal strength and can you connect ok with a network cable

Re: Unable To Renew Ip Address

Have reentered all the required info, and when I open a browser I can surf the internet, but the signal is dropped every 8 to 10 mins, when I click on re connect it does so , but 8 to 10Mins later it drops.
Signal strength was 24Mbps, not 54Mbps as previous.
The connection is with a Cat5 cable.
When you say take encryption off, do you mean WPA?
Is it safe to post ipconfig /all on this forum, as I have not seen the whole page posted before? This is new too me. Selkirk.

Re: Unable To Renew Ip Address

Hi Selkirk
Should be perfectly safe as all IPs pertaining to your machine should be in the private networking reserved prefix (192.168.x.x) which is shared by all routers and not accessible via the Internet.
All we want to check is that the default gateway and  DNS servers are  set correctly in the TCP/IP stack in accordance with the advice given.
We are just here to help.
If you are still uneasy about posting to the forum, please free to PM me the details and I shall be happy to check them for you.
All the best

Re: Unable To Renew Ip Address

Looks ok although it appears  you have two active interfaces which could be confusing matters (nothing wrong with multihoming but these connections are usually on separate networks)
If you have your Ethernet plugged in as well, pull the plug and either reboot or at the command prompt type ipconfig /renew to ensure that your connection goes through wireless.
When you are done, run a tracert, to do this:
Go to cmd as before and type tracert 194.119.131.66 and then press enter, copy and paste the results and one of us will have a look
