Ubuntu swaps application menus for "head-up display" control system

[quote=BBC News]The Ubuntu operating system is to replace its application menus with a "head-up display" (HUD) box.
Users control the HUD interface by typing in the command they want carried out.
Developers of the Linux-based software say they will initially offer the HUD as an option, allowing users to "hide" their menu bars.
They say that using the HUD is faster than "mousing through a menu" and makes applications feel more powerful.

Re: Ubuntu swaps application menus for "head-up display" control system

I hated that global menu bar (sort of HUD-let) + Unity did it for me.
Although I've moved my main machine over to Mint, they also seem to have delusions of grandeur, in that they are plotting to build their own style of desktop.  Cry
I've kind of got a mixture of Mint menu + access to Gnome 3.
Gnome 3 is starting to look pretty good.  Smiley

Not once in that article (or the original post) does it mention that this applies only to one particular desktop (unity).
If you don't like it there are plenty of others.

It is a shame that Ubuntu has completely lost it's way on the desktop design and it's previous stability.
My favorite desktop is Ubuntu 10.10 which will still be perfectly usable for another couple of years, but already the program versions in the repositories are getting out of date - for example Firefox is currently v3.6.24.

GNOME 3 is adding a global menu bar for apps.
That HUD just looks like a command line for GUI programs.  Grin

totally useless if you don't know/remember the name of the application you want to run.  This happens to me all the time on Windows 7s menu search thing!

Looks like I shall have to get the Ubuntu manual out and brush up on terminal commands (oh well, back to the Sinclair QL).
