Re: Ubuntu and win10

No change really.

"Ubuntu on Windows allows one to use Ubuntu Terminal and run Ubuntu command line utilities including bash, ssh, git, apt and many more"

If you want a GUI, you still need to do it the proper way.

i.e. Install Linux as a VM or direct to disk.

Re: Ubuntu and win10

The Windows subsystem for Linux is aimed primarily at developers.

In theory if you install a Windows X-server, Xming is one of several available, graphical applications can be run.

In practice, much like WINE on Linux, some graphical applications will run easily, some will need configs tweaked, and some will not run at all.

I suppose this at least allows use of ssh, scp and sftp (secure connections); thus allowing you to run a Raspberry Pi in headless mode.Thumbs_Up

Re: Ubuntu and win10

I expect most Windows users would choose PuTTY for that.

That PuTTY thing looks awful to setup.

I've never actually tried it; did consider installing it on Linux once but I already had ssh et al already configured on server & client so PuTTY seemed a little superfluous (I'm maybe doing it a disservice).

Mate of mine uses Putty on his Windows box that he has for gaming, just to manage the remote servers for those games. He says it's less hassle than installing something like cygwin or vm software just to get a terminal emulator.

And you gotta respect any small footprint software that K.I.S.S.

Re: Ubuntu and win10

Used to use PuTTY to manage my Linux STBs back when I was a Windows user/before I went full time Linux desktop.
Really isn't difficult to setup or use.

Nowadays I'll often use JuiceSSH or Connectbot on an Android device rather than booting up my PC to manage my Pis for example, coz it's more convenient.

Re: Ubuntu and win10

Once you have got ssh set up, then you just type ssh + parameters...(at least if you have a Linux terminal window)

It's just a one line command, so configuring extra stuff just seems unnecessary.
