Just received my March copy of Linux Format Magazine and the cover-disc includes Ubuntu 11.10 with Gnome 3.0 instead of Unity.
"We needed a distro on which to base our Newbie Guide. It had to be newbie-friendly, popular and with a Gnome 3 desktop. Ubuntu fitted the first two, so we gave it a facelift"
I'm not a Ubuntu user (I have Mint as a back-up) so I'm not sure how good this is . Just posting it for info.

Ubuntu 11.10 has GNOME 3.2; I suspect you mean LXF are using gnome-shell instead of Unity.

If you have Mint 12 you'll have the same GNOME 3.2 and gnome-shell from the same repos as Ubuntu 11.10
