Trouble long unused IE

Generally I use Firefox and so have not used IE for some while. I tied today by clicking in Start, All programs. The hour glass show momentarily, vanishes after which nothing happens.
I have also downloaded a later version, but then get, "Set up was unable to initialize. Pleas look at the logs in C:\Windows for more information".
What is happening with regard to para #1? I haven't a clue what I should be looking for in the logs either, so am up the creek.
I would be grateful for any help to get IE working once more.
Thanks folks Smiley

Re: Trouble long unused IE

The log file will be called ie7.log or ie7-main.log. It may give some clue. What service pack have you got? you may be able to remove IE from add remove then choose windows.
Try going to windows update and see what that says often you need some other updates before you can install IE as IE is linked in with outlook and other stuff.

Re: Trouble long unused IE

The problem is it cant find the dll which you can download from
http://www.dlldump.com/download-dll-files_new.php/dllfiles/M/msftedit.dll/5.41.15.15092/download.htm...
the problem is there are a few version of this file so its getting the right one
MS have it here
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/883483
I suspect if you download it and put in windows\system32 dir you may then get another error for a file it cant find as you havent got some update thats needed for the install it worth a download and try
