Trouble accessing a hard drive on HP laptop

I was given a laptop which stopped working. I was asked to recover the pictures before doing anything with it.
Well I took the HD out and put it in a caddy to try and accress it through my home computer which has the same version of Vista Home Premium
All the files can be read but when I try to access the documents bit it complains that I dont have admin authority to access those files.
Even with a password I see no option to getting in with it.
Can anyone advise a workaround?
Also is anyone familiar with HP and how to access the recovery partition? I know every machine can be different
