Toshiba laptop battery

My wife has recently bought a Toshiba laptop - her first computer!
She always uses it in the house, near to a mains socket, so the battery will only be used very, very, occasionally.
To make the laptop lighter for her (we are both in our 80's), I have uplugged the battery, making sure that it was fully charged.
I am certain that the battery should be plugged back in occasionally, discharged and then recharged.
My question is, how often should I do this? I can't find the answer on Google or on the Toshiba web site.
Many thanks.
Keith.

Re: Toshiba laptop battery

Is the battery a NiCa, NiMh or Li-ion?
Only the first of those needs conditioning as you describe and I thought it was a long time since new laptaps had those!

Re: Toshiba laptop battery

Hello Jelv.
Thanks for your reply.
It's a Ni-MH battery

Re: Toshiba laptop battery

There's no need to discharge it as you with NiCa batteries. I'd suggest popping it in to charge for about an hour every couple of weeks.

Re: Toshiba laptop battery

Laptop battery life has three significant influences -
1)  The number of times it gets charged, after about 300 to 400 charges the capacity will be down to about two thirds.
      - so only put on charge when running low.
2)  The temperature,
      - try and keep it cool while operating - preferably lower than 20'C, and certainly lower than 25'C.
      - for storage it is recommended keeping in a fridge in a moisture-proof container.
3)  Time from the moment the battery was manufactured.
      - nothing you can do about that !
      - when buying a replacement ALWAYS check the manufacturing date which should be on the packaging.
