[I'm disgusted with the current Government spying instructions - (Traffic Analysis).]
I think I've set up a client and a server properly - the Server is working, but I don't know how to test the client.

it'll be interesting to see how long governments allow tor to remain viable (or legal) if the network of tor nodes gets really big ...

I forgot to limit usage and I got 1GByte of traffic in about 5 hours.
I had limited bandwidth to 50KBytes/sec - so it pretty well maxed out.
Thanks for the links.
I think it would be quite difficult to block TOR - but not impossible (nothing is )
According to http://www.torproject.org/docs/tor-doc-unix.html.en#verify everything is working perfectly.

http://blog.wired.com/27bstroke6/2009/01/uk-approves-pol.html they want every phone and email saved as well. There is the new porn law coming into play this month as well which is crazy.
It outlaws women being tied up in simple terms and could be used to get people who have films like the Avengers, Dracula etc. Its very badly worded and will cause all sorts of problem. Were will it all end?

I wonder how the plods are going to enforce this in the bedroom.

hmmm I just installed tor on my windows xp system and it slowed browsing to sub-dialup speeds (set up as "client only") -- bbmax tested at 289kbps instead of my regular ~6000kbps
if you'd experienced the same on your nix box i'd expect you to have said something ...
at the moment it makes browsing unusable for me so i've turned it off

RelayBandwidthRateset?
RelayBandwidthBurst
In
/etc/tor/torrcmine read:-
RelayBandwidthRate 50KBytes
RelayBandwidthBurst 100 KBytes
50KBytes is about 400Kbps
I've also added two lines at the end:-
AccountingStart day 00:30
AccountingMax 300 MB
I don't notice any performance hit - it's a 8Mbit ADSL2+ connection.
Perhaps an bit of memory usage - but nothing much.
It's very slow to actually use Tor as a client, via the Firefox Torbutton
so I mostly just let the server run.

so you're running a relay (great for the rest of us) but not taking advantage of making your own browsing etc secure ?

Tor is really designed to allow communication for those situations where you
need access to the outside world from a police state.
We are not there yet, but we have a lot of the infrastructure in place.
When that happens, I'll have my Tor client well set-up and my browsing will be
lost in the midst of a pile of Tor traffic.

Tor creates a large number of simultaneous connections.
