Thunderbird keeps reverting from IMAP to POP3 profile

I would be very grateful for any help with a problem that's still bugging my laptop. My desktop and laptop both use Thunderbird and Win7 Home Premium.  When I changed to IMAP some time ago, the desktop had no trouble with it but the laptop keeps reverting to an old POP3 profile that should no longer exist.  I have tried removing the old POP3 accounts and setting up an IMAP account through Account Settings, creating new profiles and deleting old ones with Profile Manager.  I have even completely uninstalled Tbird on the laptop with Revo Uninstaller and reinstalled it from a Mozilla download.  The problem persists.
Both machines have the GB version of Tbird installed.  They also have MozBackup installed.  At the end of the day's session I back up my Tbird profile on the desktop as a pcv file, then I transfer it to the laptop using an Easy Transfer Cable.  It's too big for GoodSync, which I use for syncing ordinary documents, spreadsheets, etc.  Then I update the profile on the laptop with MozBackup.  When I look in the laptop's Tbird profile folder, the IMAP info is all there but for some reason it can't be picked up until I have gone through the rigmarole of removing the old POP3 accounts and setting up the IMAP account yet again.  That's only a temporary fix.  I know it will revert at the next session.  The Local Folders on the laptop are always updated OK.  No problem there.
I'm obviously missing something.  There's some abstruse setting in the laptop's Tbird that I haven't found yet.  Beyond the simplest operations Tbird Help gets very geeky and I can't see the wood there for trees.  Any ideas?
