Thinking of a laptop

I'm looking at this one: http://direct.tesco.com/q/R.210-8264.aspx
Tesco have the voucher exchange scheme running at the moment I have enough Tesco vouchers to use which effectively means I would get it for £200.
Any comments or alternative suggestions (from http://direct.tesco.com/q/N.1999033/Nr.99.aspx obviously!).

Re: Thinking of a laptop

I have one of these.... but more basic spec....  only problem I have found with it, is the " earphones and mic socket is in the middle front between your hands when typing..... tends to get in the way... esp if the lead is dangling down and you want to get up for coffee, ....... have often got my feet caught up in it.... ( thinks... I could put the lead around the back so it is tucked up out of the way ! ! ! )... would have been better on the side...
I have it switched on and in use pretty much from 8 am to 10 pm daily.... so gets some use....

Re: Thinking of a laptop

Pentium is at the lower end of Intel's current range of processors, though it is dual-core.
Doesn't have unreliable Nvidia graphics, that's a plus.
Only wireless g, not wireless n.
HDMI output is good, do they still have a VGA output though?
It's not bad value for money at £400 so a bargain at £200.

Re: Thinking of a laptop

hmmm ... I'd sooner go for this one http://direct.tesco.com/q/R.209-9076.aspx
toshiba's seem to be a bit better than dell's these days -- according to many reviews
it's got b,g,n wifi & what appears to be a decent software bundle for same price

Re: Thinking of a laptop

Yes, Barky makes a good point.  The Toshiba has the same processor as the Dell, wireless n instead of g but VGA instead of HDMI output.  Toshiba do make some good inexpensive laptops.

Re: Thinking of a laptop

My daughter has the Dell one, and I would agree with Shutter's comments.
Also the screen is very glossy and reflects everything, difficult to focus on for long periods - though most home laptops have glossy screens now, only the more expensive business range have the matte screen, though I believe you can get anti-glare films.
Otherwise, it's a great laptop for the price.

Re: Thinking of a laptop

Toshibas quality is somewhat questionable of their cheaper laptops.
Dell i find hideous.
id pick the Tosh over the Dell anyday.
Samsung is my choice - however tesco dont have any 'good' samsung branded laptops.
Depends what you want it for Jelv ?

Re: Thinking of a laptop

General use, bit of office, email, general browsing, probably watching programs on iPlayer and VPN/remote desktop in to the office.
Edit: the one thing I can absolutely rule out is gaming!

Re: Thinking of a laptop

I have had several Dell Latitude laptops for work, which are excellent. Good prices from Dell Outlet.
At home we have a couple of mid range Acer laptops, both over 3 years old and, except for a replacement battery from ebay, both trouble free.
From my experience, I would recommend both brands.
I have learnt that it is not wise to buy expensive laptops because you never get value for money. Mid range is the way to go.

Re: Thinking of a laptop

For half price jelv, i wouldnt complain because you wont be stressing it.
For updating drivers, or reformatting, theyre abit of a pain.
Your quite knowledgable - you should be fine with it though im sure Wink
for 200 notes, its not a bad deal Smiley (but id go for the tosh out of the two!)
