Telnet has stopped working - just ignore - I should have been using tracert

When I try the telnet command I get this result on any site
Operating system Windows 7
Quote
Connecting To bbc.co.uk...Could not open connection to the host, on port 23: Connect failed

Telnet client is enabled
Plusnet Firewall is set to low
Router firewall TG582n is set to normal
Disabled KIS to no effect
Started the command prompt with admin privilege
Disabled then enabled telnet client
Rebooted computer
Uninstalled todays update KB3035583
Ping works fine
It appears that there is no telnet service running except Routerstats is working fine

Re: Telnet has stopped working

Of course you can't connect to any random web server on port 23!
telnet www.example.com 80

Re: Telnet has stopped working

Port 23 has always been the Windows Telnet default
However
C:\Users\Jim>telnet www,bbc.co.uk 80
Connecting To www,bbc.co.uk...Could not open connection to the host, on port 80: Connect failed

Re: Telnet has stopped working

Update
Checked on the XP machine with the same result so it is either Plusnet or the router
Tried a gateway hop - no effect

If that's a copy/paste try again with the comma replaced with a full stop!

Correct, that is the port telnet will use on the client if you don't specify anything different. But the server also has to be listening on port 23 for you to get a response. 99% of web servers will be listening to port 80 (and often other http ports).

Re: Telnet has stopped working

Can telnet router
Telnet www.bbc.co.uk 80 gives a blank screen
Telnet www.plus.net fails eventually
Telnet ntp.plus.net just hangs at connecting
It all used to work OK so what could have changed

Re: Telnet has stopped working

All three of those prove telnet is working as expected.
When you got the blank screen from the BBC (i.e. telnet had successfully established the connection) did you ask it to get a page?
www.plus.net (without a port number) will not respond because it is not listening on port 23.

Re: Telnet has stopped working

I'm not sure what you are trying to achieve, but you may find http://www.esqsoft.com/examples/troubleshooting-http-using-telnet.htm useful.

Re: Telnet has stopped working

Now I'm making the same mistake.
$ telnet www.plus.net
Trying 212.159.9.2...
^C
$ telnet www.plus.net 80
Trying 212.159.8.2...
Connected to www.plus.net.
Escape character is '^]'.

If you telnet to a webserver, you have to type in HTTP protocol, so "GET /" is the minimum that might return some HTML output. If you type in any random letters and press return, you might get some sort of response back.

Re: Telnet has stopped working

It all came about because of this thread http://community.plus.net/forum/index.php/topic,138268.0.html where I tried a telnet trace and it failed
Previously I have always used the standard command telnet etc. and it just worked so why has it suddenly stopped

Jim,
Of all people!!
May be its all that kitchen wiring that's confusing you?
If I were you, with the power you have I'd lock this thread!

I did consider posting a suggestion that he should change his user name from OldJim to something else!
