Just wanted to flag up Spotify (https://www.spotify.com/en/) here as I have just recently discovered it myself and it's quite impressive. It's still in beta and I think it's still an "invitation only" thing so if anyone wants an invite to give it a try then I have a few spare. And don't worry that its some dodgy file sharing thing - it isn't! You might want to be aware that it does use p2p technology though. Anyway, pm me if you'd like an invite - first come, first served!

Talking of kids using it leads me to ask how do I identify spotify in terms of managing the use of it in peak time. Can I block it with the router like I block youtube?

What quality does Spotify stream in?
We use the Ogg Vorbis q5 codec which streams at approximately 160kb/s.

Regarding the bandwidth question...
From here...
Quote from: Spotify What bandwidth does Spotify need?
We recommend 256 kbit/s. Spotify usually works well on a 3G connection.
256kbps x 60 = 15360kbpm x 60 = 921600kbph / 8 = 115200kB/h / 1000 = 115.2Mb
So if it did operate at the maximum of 256kbps all the time then you'd consume just over 115Mb per hour. That equates to just over 1gb after 9 hours continuous playback.

The FAQ is quite helpful. It does cache the music on your disk so if you have a fairly static playlist then I guess your bandwidth usage will reduce over time.

Quote Carl-Axel, Official Rep, replied 3 months ago
Spotify uses a peer-to-peer network to relieve the pressure on our
streaming servers. We use a hybrid model where central servers and
peers work in unison to provide you the best, fastest experience in an
economically viable fashion.
Currently, the system is rather naïve, but the long-term goal is for
Spotify to recognize that the Internet connection is used by other
software and scale back it's own use quickly so as never to interfere
with whatever you want to use the connection for.
What sort of control would you like to have over Spotify's behaviour?
It's a trade-off between simplicity and configurability that we're
trying to navigate.
So their FAQ is a bit misleading, which isn't good.
I still have 4 invites left...
