Re: Spin Up Times Decreasing

How can your spin-up time keep decreasing - as in taking less and less time?
Do you mean increasing? Smiley

Re: Spin Up Times Decreasing

I think you mean it's taking longer to spin up - in seconds!  Smiley
You need to find out how these values correspond with the actual spin-up times (in seconds).
As an example,
Quote
SMART Attributes Data Structure revision number: 10
Vendor Specific SMART Attributes with Thresholds:
ID# ATTRIBUTE_NAME          FLAG    VALUE WORST THRESH TYPE      UPDATED  WHEN_FAILED RAW_VALUE
  1 Raw_Read_Error_Rate    0x000f  111  099  006    Pre-fail  Always      -      30154857
  3 Spin_Up_Time            0x0003  100  100  000    Pre-fail  Always      -      0
  4 Start_Stop_Count        0x0032  100  100  020    Old_age  Always      -      239
  5 Reallocated_Sector_Ct  0x0033  100  100  036    Pre-fail  Always      -      0
  7 Seek_Error_Rate        0x000f  070  060  030    Pre-fail  Always      -      11376654
  9 Power_On_Hours          0x0032  099  099  000    Old_age  Always      -      1197
10 Spin_Retry_Count        0x0013  100  100  097    Pre-fail  Always      -      0
12 Power_Cycle_Count      0x0032  100  100  020    Old_age  Always      -      771

This was taken from a Linux machine, but the spin-up time will always be SMART ID# 3
Although these numbers look scary, my disk passed without error.
I would guess that the raw values for ID #9 and #12 are reasonable...

Re: Spin Up Times Decreasing

I wouldn't worry about it until you have a good couple of months 'usage' against the drive.  The predicted T.E.C.  (Threshold Exceed Condition) will be much more "accurate" after that.
If it's still reporting a similar date after then, I'm not sure that there is much you can do about it.  You can contact the manufacturer, but if the failure date is outside their warranty period, then you may not make much headway.
However, some manufacturers will likely want to get a drive back to QA, so they may be amenable to replacing it.
